NFPA 110 is the US standard for emergency and standby power systems, and it is the reason most American generators get load-bank tested every year. If a standby diesel never runs near full load, unburned fuel and carbon build up in the exhaust — 'wet stacking' — which fouls the engine and can cause it to fail exactly when it is needed.

The annual test loads the generator to prove it can carry its rated output, and to burn off that build-up. NFPA 110 expects diesel sets that don't reach roughly 30% of nameplate in normal running to be exercised under added load; the load bank supplies that load, cleanly and controllably, when the building's own load can't.

1 — Connect

Connect the load bank at the generator output or a downstream breaker, sized to the set's rated kW.

2 — Ramp to Load

Bring the generator up and step the load to rated output, watching voltage and frequency stability.

3 — Hold at Full Load

Run at full rated load long enough to reach stable temperatures and burn off wet stacking.

4 — Log & Document

Record kW, voltage, frequency and temperatures for the maintenance record and the AHJ.
